Why It Matters

Despite being a protected class in the state of Illinois, LGBT home buyers, sellers, and renters still face many adversities in real estate transactions. Unfortunately, little research and data exists in regards to LGBT individuals and real estate, but the data that does exist is quite alarming.

54% of LGBT people own real estate in some form. (NAGLREP 2015)

A 2013 HUD survey of LGBT home buyers, sellers, and renters found that gay male couples were significantly less likely to receive responses from housing providers compared to heterosexual couples. Lesbian couples also received less responses from housing providers compared to heterosexual couples.

According to the HUD survey gay males couples did not benefit from legislative measures in “adverse treatment,” although lesbian couples did see some benefit. HUD contributes this to a lack of enforcement in current laws.

A 2015 study by the National Association of Gay and Lesbian Real Estate Professionals found that 73% of LGBT correspondents were strongly concerned with discrimination in purchasing or renting a home.
